The Mint is coming back!

The mint is coming back already! The whiskey barrel of mint I planted last summer has already produced a carpet of green! Inside is orange mint, peppermint and chocolate mint!

Blackberry Bush is growing!

The Thornless Apache Blackberry Bush I got last fall for $2 made it through the winter even though I didn't plant it. The leaves are starting to come out on the branches and it looks pretty healthy so far!

First Herbs of the season!

When I was buying my raspberry plants the other day I was surprised to see herbs and tomato plants out already! Since I live in Connecticut our outdoor growing season really doesn't start till May 15th. So as I browsed, I noticed a sale was going on so I looked for some stuff I needed. Ever since Starbucks took my regular tea away (orange blossom green tea) I've been drinking green tea with Spearmint, which is delicious! So even though I have peppermint, orange mint and chocolate mint, I don't have spearmint in my garden. So I put spearmint on my list of plants for 2013! As I searched, they had basil, rosemary, lavender and mint! Once I found the spearmint I decided to see if they had anything else. I hesitated buying basil because I collected a bunch of seeds from last years plant and hope to grow some from that. They had parsley but I've actually have never used it, so why grow it ! Then I saw cilantro, I love the spicy kick of cilantro especially over hot soup or in guacamole! So I picked up some cilantro as well. The mint and cilantro were only $2 a piece!!!! Not a bad deal, now lets just hope the warm weather keeps up!

Finally got my Raspberry Plants!!!

I first pondered the idea if growing raspberries in my backyard last summer, however like all fruit plants, summer is not the time to plant or even find raspberry plants for planting. As fall arrived I kept my eye out for any plants on sale, all I found was some blueberry bushes and a blackberry plant (which I got an amazing deal on!). So as winter came to an end, abet very slowly here in the northeast, I once again began looking for raspberry plants, knowing that early spring is the best time to plant. I checked Lowes first but they only had 2 varieties, neither of which were Heritage variety. These two varieties were developed in Washington state and performed best with a gradual warm up in spring, something that is very rare here in CT! So I held off and decided to check other stores.
So I was ecstatic to see Home Depot had raspberry plants on sale. So I went hoping they would have red heritage variety and they did! So I got two red heritage variety raspberry plants. They had other varieties as well. The fall gold variety caught my eye and when I saw it was an ever bearing variety like the red heritage, I was sold! So I ended up with 2 fall gold raspberry plants as well!
Now I have 4 raspberry plants that should produce a fall crop this year and then a spring and fall crop every year!!! I can't wait to have some but first I have to find a good spot for them!

Happy Spring!

Its finally spring! although it definitely hasn't felt like it here in CT. We're still over a month away from the unofficial planting day of (May 15th) but we're getting closer! This winter has been long and It's been a while since I've updated since I've been working on my Master's Thesis but I should be all done with that by May 1st, when I can really start focusing on the garden!! I'm hoping to start garden clean up soon and pick up some raspberry bushes in the next few days! Until then enjoy this photo of some spring flowers I found today!
