My Beautiful Mint Plant

Mint is an awesome and easy herb to grow but it can also take over your garden! This is why I plant my mint in containers. It keeps it contained and easy to get too.

Usually my mint will come back every year, even in the container. However, with really cold and snowy winters lately, some of my mint has been killed off. However, this year my spearmint did come back! Although it took its sweet time coming back, I didn't see new growth on it till late May. By that time I had planted a peppermint plant in the same pot.

Now they're growing together in the same pot and it's actually working out pretty well. Not to mention it makes for some nice green foliage in the garden.

I've used the mint to flavor my water recently and to chew on some leaves to help with indigestion.

I could also try drying some and saving it for peppermint tea in the winter!

My Rosemary Survived the winter!!!

My potted Rosemary from last summer survived the winter! Of course it helped that I put it in my shed for a few months!  Ever since I took it back out in March it didn't show much life at all but I just noticed today some new growth at the top of every stem!  Rosemary can't survive in the ground up here in CT due to the cold winters but leaving it in the pot and taking a little extra care paid off! Now I don't have to buy new Rosemary this summer!

Planted Basil 7/4/13

While my basil seedlings continue to grow I planted the small pot of basil I got at Lowes in the ground near my tomatoes.  They're companion plants so they should grow well together!

Finally Planted the Rosemary!!!

Back before July 4th I bought basil, well along with it I got a small rosemary plant. Since technically rosemary can be a perennial and i live on the borderline zone where it could survive all winter, I decided to plant it in a pot. Hoping that by planting it in a pot and putting it in the garage, along with my blueberry bushes, it might survive till next year! Till then I hope to enjoy fresh rosemary with chicken and potatoes! I may also try drying some rosemary for winter use!

Rosemary is the third herb I planted this year in my garden, well actually the third herb I've ever planted! Now I have mint, basil and rosemary growing in my yard!

Re-potted basil and cucumber plants

I finally got around to potting my basil plant, I bought the herb at Lowes around 4th of July, kind of late in the season but it's still useful! I also re-potted some cucumber plants. After seeing how well the squash plant is doing in the pot, I decided to grow some cucumber in pots. I have the pickle bush variety which is compact, therefore easy to grow in containers. I started the cucumber from seed the last week of June in one pot. They sprout pretty quick during the 90 degree heat and I separated them today so each plant has their own pot. I'll stake the cucumbers so they grow straight up and hopefully will give me some extra cucumbers! As I laid the new pots on the deck next to my watermelon and cayenne peppers, I realized my container garden is getting pretty big! I love it!

Now I just need to find a place for my rosemary plant...
