Planted Radishes! 5/6/13

On Monday I planted some radish seeds in black pots.  This is the first time I'm growing radishes and I love the fact that from seed they are ready to eat in less than a month!! 

I used Burpee's cherry Belle radish seeds that mature in 22 days! Which means I should have radishes by May 28th! I can't wait! 

I put them in black pots in hopes to keep them warm if we get a chill in the next week or so.  If it goes well I have seeds still that I can't plant in September for a nice fall crop too! 

Bought my vegetable plants!!

My dad and I went to Lowes over the weekend to pick up some tomato plants for the garden...I think I went a little over board! 

Not only did I get more tomato plants than I was expecting I also got pepper plants, cucumbers, squash and basil! In all I ended up with: 

8 tomato plants 

4 hot pepper plants 

4 sweet pepper plants 

1 cucumber pot (6 plants in it)

1 squash pot (6 plants in it) 

1 sweet basil plant 

1 packet of mixed lettuce seeds

1 packet of red Swiss chard seeds

1 packet of Swiss chard seeds 

3 black plastic pots 

More Garden Clean up!

This past weekend was so beautiful here in CT I started really cleaning up the gardens.  General rule of thumb is to plant after May 15th in my neck of the woods, so I need to prep now! I cleaned out the back section of the garden finally.  It had filled up with leaves, a layer at least 6 inches deep.  I haven't done much to the soil yet but I'll turn it and add some compost before planting! 

Garden in a blizzard!! 2/8/13

Really tall Tomato Plants!

As I harvested from my garden yesterday I noticed that two of my five tomato plants are finally taller than myself! My Marion tomato plant and my Juliet tomato plants are at least 6 feet (probably taller!). I have them supported with this curvy pole but that only goes up to a little over 5 feet.

Now I'm 5'10" and the plants are a few inches taller than me!

More Flowers and wet Watermelons

The cucumber plants I placed in containers on my deck are beginning to flower and they look great!

Also in my container garden are my sugar baby watermelon plants! So far I have two melons and even after a heavy rainfall they still look great!

Fruits of my labor!

I decided to take a few photos of all the food from my garden that is in the fridge or ripening on the windowsill. This is not everything that is from my garden because I've eaten a lot but I feel it's still very impressive at least for my garden skills!!

Small Harvest and Garden Update 7/24/12

Today's harvest was small just a cherry tomato and a Big Boy Tomato. Since I didn't get a big harvest I thought I would take some pictures of the garden. I took a picture of the garden, of the Japanese eggplant growing, my watermelon plant and the cucumber plants I started in pots in early July!

I also threw in a picture of a side dish I made using basil and cherry tomatoes from my yard! I added some mozzarella with a little oil for a great taste!

Harvest before the rain! 7/23/12

I woke up to thunder rumbling in the distance, with the impending thunderstorms I went to the garden to see if anything was ready to pick. I ended up picking a cherry tomato, a small (and odd shape) pickle bush cucumber, and a Marion tomato. The Marion tomato is the first large tomato of the year!!!

More Zucchini! 7/21/12

I harvested a large zucchini this morning off my plant that was damaged by the storm last week. It's good to know that the fruit is still growing on it! I also noticed that some of the larger tomatoes are starting to change color!

A few more Cherry Tomatoes! 7/21/12

After a good soaking yesterday I got a chance to look at my garden. The damaged zucchini plant seems to be still alive some how and has a large zucchini on it. Since my family is having a picnic I decided to keep it on to show everyone. I picked a few cherry tomatoes, some completely ripe and some not all the way there but I'll keep them in the windowsill. It's better to ripen inside then get eaten on the vine!

My Sugar Baby watermelon!

My sugar baby watermelon plant is taking off! It has plenty of flowers on it but so far most of the female ones (the ones that will produce the melon) have dried up. Although there is a new female flower and it looks like the melon part is a little bigger! It's cool it looks like a mini watermelon
