August 5, 2012 Harvest and Crop #fail

Today I got a bunch of partially ripe cherry tomatoes! But not everything was good. I noticed yesterday that one of my zucchini plants, the one that just produced a zucchini last week, had dried up. When it was the same today I looked closer and noticed the stem looked torn, as I tried to straighten the large plant the stem broke!! As I looked closely I noticed some grub like pests inside the stem eating away! Another crop fail but on the bright side it gives other plants, especially my garden beans some more space and sunshine!

Today's harvest:
11 cherry tomatoes (partially ripe)
1 Juliet tomato (partially ripe)

First Harvest of August! 8/1/12

This mornings Harvest:

1 ten inch zucchini
1 medium Marion tomato (partially ripen)
7 cherry tomatoes (partially ripen)
3 small hot peppers

More Zucchini! 7/21/12

I harvested a large zucchini this morning off my plant that was damaged by the storm last week. It's good to know that the fruit is still growing on it! I also noticed that some of the larger tomatoes are starting to change color!

Storms killed my Zucchini Plant!

On May 18th many areas of the northeast from Boston to D.C. saw strong to severe thunderstorms with high winds, heavy downpours, hail and even some funnel clouds! Knowing these storms were on their way I moved my container garden around for protection. This included moving my large zucchini plant that I'm growing in a pot. I moved this one purposely because I read that squash plants are susceptible to wind damage. After moving all of my pots into safer and covered positions I awaited the storms! Yet as they looked like they were about to unleash they're fury on my town they fell apart giving us just some light rain. As the afternoon progressed into night it looked as of we would only get some rain and no more storms. So I decided to move the zucchini plant back out into the open to get some water. Well the next morning, the 19th, I woke up to a brief but torrential downpour and when I went out to my garden I noticed the zucchini plant was completely bent over, snapped at the stem! I was extremely disappointed and have yet to do anything with it. It still has a zucchini on it and the leaves have yet to die. I'm going to wait and see whether the zucchini continues to grow before trying to salvage the plant.

First Zucchini harvest!

On July 6th my first two Zucchinis were ready to pick! I actually planted one of the summer squash plants on my back deck and it has been doing great. The combination of space, sun and heat from the deck has allowed it to get pretty large (in fact it kind of looks like a tropical palm plant). The smaller of the two Zucchinis I cut up and threw into a salad, putting the larger one into the refrigerator. Then three days later on July 9th another zucchini was ready for picking! This one even larger then the first two! I uses both the newly picked zucchini and the large one from July 6th for dinner. I sliced them up, covered them in some olive oil with some salt and wrapped them in tin foil, placing them over the grill for 5-7 mins. They were amazing! I can't wait to have more zucchini from my backyard!

First Flowers!!

Towards the end of June the vegetable plants began to flower! The summer squash (zucchini), the cucumber plants, watermelon, and most recently eggplant!
